Access to HE Engineering: What Universities Ask For

Yes, an Access to HE Diploma can get you onto an engineering degree, but the maths inside it matters most. Universities usually name the maths credits they want, often at Distinction, and some also ask for physics. If your Diploma is light on maths, an engineering foundation year is the usual route in.

That's the honest picture, and it's a hopeful one. Every university in this guide publishes an Access route into engineering, either straight into year 1 or through a foundation year. The trick is choosing an Access course with the right units before you start, so this guide shows exactly what eleven courses ask for.

How does an Access to HE Diploma in Engineering work?

An Access to HE Diploma is a full level 3 qualification for adults who want to go to university. QAA's Access to HE site says Diplomas "are made up of 60 credits. 45 of these are at level 3 and graded. The remaining 15 credits are not graded and may be at level 2 or level 3."

Each graded unit gets a Pass, Merit or Distinction. QAA's grading scheme says "There is no overall or composite grade for the Access to HE Diploma", so universities look at your credits unit by unit. That's why engineering offers are so specific about which units must be at Distinction.

Unlike nursing or medicine, there's no QAA subject descriptor for engineering. QAA's only descriptors are for Medicine, and for Nursing and Health Professions. So what's inside an "Access to HE Engineering" course is up to the college, and two courses with the same title can look very different.

How much maths is in an Access to HE Engineering course?

It varies, so read the unit list carefully. QAA's Diploma Specification allows units that cover "mathematics for engineers", but it also says units won't count as academic subject content "if they are principally concerned with personal development, generic English/Welsh or mathematics, or study skills".

In plain terms, the maths that universities care about is Level 3 maths such as algebra, calculus and trigonometry, taken as graded units. Before you enrol, ask the college:

1. How many graded Level 3 maths credits does the course include?
2. Does it cover calculus? Bath and Bristol name it.
3. Is there physics? Bath, Bristol and Sheffield ask for physics or other science units.

What do universities ask for from Access to HE Engineering students?

Here's what seven 2027-entry engineering degrees say about the Access to HE Diploma, from each university's own course page:

Three things jump out:

• Maths is almost always named. Warwick is the only course here that doesn't specify it up front, and it says it may add subject requirements.
• Some courses want an A-level too. Sheffield's direct-entry offer and one of Bristol's two options ask for an A in A-level Maths on top of the Diploma.
• The range is wide. UWE Bristol, with a 112 Tariff offer for A-level students, asks for maths at Merit. Bath asks for maths and physics at Distinction.

Do you need a foundation year after an Access course?

Sometimes. If your Diploma has the maths a course asks for, you can apply straight to year 1 at universities like those above. If it doesn't, or a university doesn't take Access students for year 1, a foundation year (sometimes called Year 0) is the way in.

Southampton is a clear example. Its Civil Engineering BEng page says Access to HE is "Not accepted for this course. Applicants with an Access to HE Diploma in a relevant subject should apply for the Engineering/Physics/Mathematics Foundation Year".

Foundation years still have entry requirements, and some ask for maths too:

Sheffield puts it simply: "If you don't have the usual scientific or mathematical background for an engineering degree, a foundation year is for you."

What GCSEs do you need?

GCSE rules vary from course to course, and foundation years can set a higher bar for maths (see the table above). For the 2027-entry courses in this guide:

• UWE Bristol: English and Mathematics at C/4, or equivalent
• Nottingham civil engineering: English at grade 4 (C)
• Leeds civil engineering: English Language at grade 4 (C) or higher
• Bath mechanical engineering: English Language or Literature at 4 or C
• Bristol mechanical engineering: "No specific subjects required"

If your GCSE maths is below what a course asks for, check whether Access maths credits can count instead. Nottingham's foundation programme, for instance, accepts "15 level 3 mathematics credits taken as part of Access to HE Diploma".

How many UCAS points is an Access to HE Diploma worth?

Your points depend on how many of your 45 graded credits you get at Distinction, Merit and Pass. QAA's Access to HE site confirms that "Access to HE Diplomas awarded from July 2017 are included in the UCAS Tariff tables". Here's how the grades convert:

What should you do next?

1. Pick three to five engineering courses and write down each one's Access requirement, especially the maths credits.
2. Choose an Access course that matches. Ask the college for its unit list and check it covers graded Level 3 maths, including calculus if your courses name it.
3. Check your GCSEs, and fill any gaps early.
4. Keep a foundation year on your list as a back-up route.
