Access to HE for Paramedic Science: What Universities Want

Yes, an Access to HE Diploma can get you onto a paramedic science degree. Universities such as UWE Bristol, Sheffield Hallam and Plymouth accept it for 2027 entry, usually asking for a set number of Distinction credits in science or health units, plus GCSE English, maths and science at grade 4. The degree then prepares you to register as a paramedic.

That's good news if you left school without A-levels or you're changing career. The diploma is built for adults coming back to study, and paramedic science is one of the subjects where it's well understood. Below you'll see exactly what four universities ask for, what else they check, and how your Access grades turn into UCAS points.

How does the Access to HE route into paramedic science work?

There are two stages. First you take an Access to HE Diploma, a Level 3 qualification that universities treat as an alternative to A-levels. Then you apply through UCAS for a paramedic science degree (BSc). You can't become a paramedic with the Access course alone.

According to QAA, which regulates the diploma, every Access to HE Diploma is worth 60 credits:

There's no single overall grade. Instead, universities look at how many of your 45 graded credits came out at Distinction or Merit, and often in which subjects. That's why paramedic science offers are written as "15 credits at Distinction in science" rather than a grade like BBB.

What do Access courses for paramedic science cover?

There's no QAA subject descriptor specifically for paramedic science. QAA does have one for Nursing and Health Professions, which sets minimum content for diplomas titled Access to HE Diploma (Nursing) or (Health Professions). Colleges also run Science, Health Science and Combined Science diplomas.

For paramedic science, the subject of your diploma matters because universities name it:

• Sheffield Hallam wants a diploma "in health studies, health science, nursing or another science-based course".
• Plymouth accepts Access to HE Science, Combined Science, Health or Nursing.
• UWE Bristol asks for Distinction credits in a science or social science subject.

In practice, a health science or science-based diploma with biology or human biology units keeps the most doors open. Check the unit list with your college before you enrol, and compare it with the universities you're aiming for.

What do universities ask for from Access students?

Here's what four universities ask for, from their own course pages, checked on 24 September 2026. Look closely at the year: Greenwich's page was showing 2026 entry.

The spread is wide. Plymouth wants most of your graded credits at Distinction, while UWE's stated requirement is 15 Distinction credits in the right subject. So don't rule yourself out after looking at one university.

How many UCAS points is an Access to HE Diploma worth?

Only your 45 graded credits carry UCAS points. Each credit earns points depending on whether it's a Distinction, Merit or Pass. According to QAA's guide for admissions staff, 45 credits all at Distinction carry the same Tariff points as AAA at A-level.

Points matter more at some universities than others. Greenwich sets its offer as 112 Tariff points, while UWE, Sheffield Hallam and Plymouth list a points offer but also set specific credit rules for Access students. What else do paramedic science courses check?

Paramedic science is a professional course with clinical placements, so universities check more than grades. Here's what the course pages say:

Do you need a driving licence for paramedic science?

It varies. Greenwich asks for a full UK manual licence, or lessons in progress with the licence passed by the end of the first year. Plymouth says students must drive to placements. It also says you don't need a C1 licence to join the course, but "most NHS ambulance Trusts require this". The UWE and Sheffield Hallam pages we checked don't mention a licence.

If you haven't started driving lessons yet, it's worth starting during your Access year. It widens your choice of universities, and Plymouth's note about C1 licences shows driving matters after the degree too.

Does the degree lead to HCPC registration?

Sheffield Hallam's course page puts it simply: "You must be registered with the HCPC in order to practise as a paramedic in the UK."

The universities we checked say their degrees are approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). UWE Bristol says you'll be "eligible to apply for registration as a paramedic" when you graduate, and Greenwich says the degree "will prepare you to apply to register" with the HCPC. Can you do an Access course for paramedic science online?

Some colleges and providers run Access to HE Diplomas online. Before you sign up, check that:

• the course is a QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma
• its units match what your universities want, such as natural science credits for Sheffield Hallam or biology, chemistry or physics credits for Plymouth
• you can still get GCSE maths, English or science if you're missing one

If you're unsure, email the university's admissions team with the course's unit list. They'd much rather answer a question now than turn down an application later.
