Access to HE Social Work: Getting Onto a Social Work Degree

Yes, a social work Access course can get you onto a social work degree without A-levels. The Access to HE Diploma is a full level 3 qualification that universities throughout the UK recognise. Most social work degrees also ask for GCSE English at grade 4/C, a set number of Distinction or Merit credits, an interview and an enhanced DBS check.

If you've been out of education for a while, that's exactly who this route was built for. The rest of this page shows what you study, what five universities actually ask for, and how to check your points.

What is a social work Access course?

A social work Access course is usually an Access to HE Diploma with a social work or social care focus. The Diploma is regulated by the QAA and, according to the official Access to HE website, it's designed "for people who have been out of education for some time, especially those who left school with too few qualifications to be able to go straight to university."

Each graded unit is marked Pass, Merit or Distinction, which is why universities often write their offers as "so many credits at Distinction".

What do you study on an Access to HE social work course?

Each college writes its own units, so the exact content varies. As one example, Kingston College's Access to Higher Education Diploma in Social Work lists "core subjects: Sociology, Psychology and Social Work studies", plus study skills such as note-taking, research methods and report writing.

Units like these give you a head start on the topics a social work degree covers. You'll write essays and reports, sit some assessments and learn how to reference sources, which is the kind of work you'll do on a degree.

The study skills part matters more than it sounds. If you haven't written an essay in years, those ungraded credits are where you get your confidence back before the graded work counts.

What do universities ask for from Access students?

Here's what five social work degrees say on their own course pages. Three are for 2027 entry. Birmingham City and Sunderland had only published their 2026/27 pages when we checked, so treat those as 2026 entry.

A few things jump out. Offers are written in very different ways, some as credits and some as UCAS points. The number of Distinctions asked for also ranges quite a bit. So don't assume one course's offer applies anywhere else. Check each course page for the year you're applying.

Do you need GCSE English and maths for social work?

GCSE English at grade 4/C (or an accepted equivalent) appeared on every social work course we checked. Maths is less consistent. Keele and Birmingham City ask for it, while the Goldsmiths and Sussex pages don't list a maths GCSE.

If you're missing one, don't panic. Some Access colleges let you work on it alongside your Diploma. Kingston College, for example, says you "may be given the opportunity" to study GCSE maths at the same time. Be careful with English, though: that college asks for GCSE English 4/C or equivalent and says it does not accept Level 2 Functional Skills for this.

What else do social work degrees check?

Grades get you through the first filter. Social work is a caring profession, so universities also want to know you're suitable to work with vulnerable people. On the pages we checked, that looks like this:

• Interviews and selection days. Keele runs a selection day with "a written task, a group discussion, and an individual interview". Sunderland uses an online written exercise, then a group discussion and an individual interview. Sussex and Birmingham City also interview.
• Enhanced DBS check. Keele, Sussex, Goldsmiths, Birmingham City and Sunderland all mention an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
• Health and suitability. Sussex and Sunderland mention a health check, Birmingham City an occupational health check, and Keele a Declaration of Suitability/Fitness to Practice form.
• Work experience. Goldsmiths asks for "three months full-time or part-time equivalent (375 hours in total) relevant work experience".

This is actually good news for Access students. Life experience, caring roles and paid or volunteer work often count for a lot at interview, and many Access students have plenty of it.

How many UCAS points is an Access to HE Diploma worth for social work?

Your Access to HE UCAS points come from your 45 graded credits. Each Pass, Merit and Distinction carries a set value, so your total depends on your mix of grades. The Access to HE website notes that only Diplomas awarded after July 2017 are in the UCAS Tariff.

This matters most when a university states its offer in points. Keele's 2027 offer is 112 UCAS points from the Diploma, and Sunderland's 2026 offer is a range of 104–120 points. For comparison, the A-level offer Keele gives for the same course is BBC:

When an offer is written in credits instead (like Goldsmiths or Sussex), focus on hitting the required number of Distinctions and Merits. Points won't help you if the credit profile isn't met. Can you do a social work Access course online?

Yes, online and distance learning Access to HE courses exist. The official Access to HE website says "Distance learning courses are available for registration anytime".

Two quick checks before you sign up. First, make sure the course leads to a recognised Access to HE Diploma rather than a different certificate. Second, email the admissions team at the universities you like and ask whether they accept that Diploma for social work. Because social work involves interviews and placements, it's worth knowing their view early.

How do you pay for an Access to HE course?

The Access to HE website says that if you're 19 or over you may be expected to pay full fees, and that in England you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan. GOV.UK says you must be 19 or older on the first day of your course to get one.

Here's the reassuring part. GOV.UK says Student Finance England will "write off" any outstanding Advanced Learner Loan balance for an Access to HE course once you complete a higher education course, as long as that course is eligible for student finance. Check the full conditions on GOV.UK before you apply.

Is there a Scottish access route to social work?

Yes, but it's a different qualification. This page mainly covers the QAA Access to HE Diploma, which runs in England and Wales. In Scotland, one well-known route for adults is SWAP, the Scottish Wider Access Programme.

The University of Edinburgh describes SWAP as "full-time access programmes covering a range of subject areas which take one year to complete", for people with "few or no formal qualifications" who "have been out of education for some years".

Glasgow Kelvin College's course is SCQF level 6, runs for 21 hours a week over one year, and asks that you've been out of formal education for at least three years. It says no formal qualifications are needed and lists "BA (Hons) Social Work at university" as a next step. If you're in Scotland, check with the college and your target universities which degrees the programme links to.

What should you do next?

Start with the universities, then choose the college course. It feels backwards, but it stops you picking a Diploma that doesn't match the offer.

1. Pick three to five social work degrees and note their Access to HE credit profile, GCSE needs and interview process for your entry year.
2. Choose an Access course whose title and units fit those requirements, and sort out GCSE English or maths if you're missing them.
3. Check your expected points with the Access to HE calculator as your grades come in.
