To study Medicine (BMBS, A100) at Exeter for 2027 entry, you need A*AA at A-level, including A in Biology and Chemistry, plus GCSE English Language at grade 6. You apply by 15 October 2026, sit the UCAT if you're a school leaver, and must do well at interview. Eligible applicants can get a contextual offer of AAB.
That's a high bar, but Exeter is open about how it picks people: its 2027 admissions policy publishes the scoring tables it uses to choose who gets an interview. Everything below comes from Exeter's own pages and policy, checked on 6 October 2026. Rules can change, so check the official BMBS course page before you apply.

What A-levels does Exeter medicine need?
The typical offer is A*AA. The subject rules are short:
- Chemistry and Biology are both required, each at grade A or above. The admissions policy lists Biology or Human Biology.
- You need one further A-level on top of those two. Exeter doesn't name a preferred third subject.
- General Studies isn't included in any offer.
So the A* can come from any of your three subjects, as long as Biology and Chemistry are at least an A.
The table above covers BTEC, IB and Access to HE. Even with a BTEC Extended Diploma, you still need A-level Biology and Chemistry at grade A, and the Access to HE diploma must be QAA-approved. Our Access to HE medicine guide shows how other medical schools treat the diploma.
How many UCAS points is A*AA?
Exeter sets its Medicine offer in grades, not UCAS points, so the grades in the named subjects are what count. Converting them still helps you compare medical schools:
The contextual offer looks like this on the Tariff:
You can see more on the A*AA UCAS points page and the AAB UCAS points page. For Exeter's other courses, see our University of Exeter UCAS points guide.
What GCSEs do you need for Exeter Medicine?
The only GCSE that Exeter's BMBS page lists is English Language at grade B or 6. Its FAQs say this is how you normally show "acceptable levels of literacy".
There's no minimum number of grade 7s and no named Maths or science grade on the course page. At Exeter, your A-level results or predictions and your UCAT do the heavy lifting.
Exeter says GCSE requirements "remain unaffected" by contextual offers, so you need that grade 6 whichever offer you hold.
What UCAT score is needed for Exeter?
There's no published minimum UCAT score. Exeter's FAQs say a threshold is set in November, once all scores are in, and the 2027 admissions policy explains exactly how your UCAT is used.
If you meet the entry requirements, Exeter combines your grades and your UCAT overall score into an Exeter score. The weighting is 3:1 in favour of academic achievement. Here's how it works:
- Your UCAT overall score is placed into a decile band. Exeter's tables run from the 1st to the 9th decile, with the 9th the highest.
- Each drop of one grade costs 10 points.
- Each drop of one UCAT decile costs 4 points.
Here's part of Exeter's own table for applicants with predicted grades who aren't eligible for a contextual offer:
| UCAT decile | A*A*A* | A*A*A | A*AA | AAA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9th | 90 | 80 | 70 | 60 |
| 7th | 82 | 72 | 62 | 52 |
| 5th | 74 | 64 | 54 | 44 |
| 3rd | 66 | 56 | 46 | 36 |
| 1st | 58 | 48 | 38 | 28 |
In practice, A*A*A with a 7th-decile UCAT scores 72, just ahead of A*AA with a 9th-decile UCAT on 70. One extra grade outweighs a two-decile gap in UCAT, but not a three-decile gap.
Two groups get an uplift:
- Achieved grades: if you already have your results, you get an extra 10 points. Exeter's FAQs say it brought this in after a review found that only a small percentage of applicants with achieved grades were picked for interview in 2024.
- Contextual offer eligibility: applicants eligible for a contextual offer get an extra 5 points.
Your UCAT must be taken before the application deadline, and results can't be carried over from one year to the next. If a significant or unforeseen medical or personal issue stopped you from sitting the UCAT in the 2026 test cycle, Exeter asks you to contact it to see whether it can consider your application without a result.
Is Exeter Medicine hard to get into?
Yes. The typical offer is A*AA, and meeting it is only the first step. Exeter's policy says that "meeting the typical or contextual offer does not guarantee being shortlisted for interview".
The 2027 policy gives a sense of scale:
| 2027 entry | Figure |
|---|---|
| Applicants interviewed in total (expected) | About 800 |
| Places for international students | 10 |
| International interviews (expected) | About 30 |
All home applicants are ranked by Exeter score, and the highest-ranked are invited to interview. The policy says the cut-off for international applicants may differ, because they have a separate quota.
After interviews, some applicants may be offered a place on a reserve list. If you're on it, you contact Exeter after A-level results to see whether places have opened up, but there's no guarantee.
Does Exeter interview for medicine?
Yes. Exeter uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI), which may be held in person or online. According to its FAQs, the MMI is designed to find out if you have "non-academic qualities such as the communication skills, reflectiveness and empathy" a doctor needs. Exeter says the offer decision "will typically depend on your performance at the interview".
The course page says shortlisted applicants are interviewed between December and March, while the FAQs say interviews normally run in December and January. Offers come only after all interviews are done, by the end of March, so a quiet January doesn't mean you've been rejected.
Help with travel is available if you meet certain criteria. If you need reasonable adjustments, such as those in an EHC plan, tell the admissions team as soon as you're invited.
Does Exeter make contextual offers for medicine?
Yes. For 2027 entry, the contextual offer for Medicine is AAB, and it must still include an A in Biology and an A in Chemistry. So the lower grade falls on your third subject. The IB contextual offer is 34/665 and the BTEC one is DDD.
Exeter's university-wide criteria for 2027 include:
- Living in a POLAR4, TUNDRA or IMD quintile 1 or 2 area and attending a state school
- Attending a non-selective state school or college on Exeter's South West and Wales list
- Having received free school meals and attending a state school
- Being care-experienced, a carer or an estranged student, or seeking asylum or holding refugee status
- Taking part in a listed programme, such as Exeter Scholars, IntoUniversity or SEREN
Exeter warns that grade adjustments can differ on courses with subject requirements, so go by the Medicine offer of AAB. Eligible applicants also get the 5-point Exeter score uplift. Exeter's online eligibility checker shows if you qualify, and our guide to how contextual offers work explains the idea.
Can graduates, resitters or mature applicants apply?
Yes, but your route depends on when you finished your A-levels or equivalent.
- Direct school leavers are people starting the course no more than two full academic years after finishing Level 3 study. You sit the UCAT.
- Non-direct school leavers, including all graduates, sit the GAMSAT instead. Exeter turns your GAMSAT result into an Exeter score, and its FAQs say your previous degree or school results aren't taken into account. GAMSAT results from March 2025, September 2025, March 2026 and September 2026 are valid for 2027 entry.
- Resitters can apply. Exeter says it will consider applicants who have retaken part or all of a qualification, and its admissions policy explains how achieved grades are scored.
There's also an internal route. Final-year Exeter students on BSc Medical Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Neuroscience or Sports and Exercise Medical Sciences who are predicted a 2:1 or First are shortlisted for interview without needing the UCAT or GAMSAT.
Exeter's BMBS page doesn't list a foundation year route into Medicine. If you don't have the science A-levels, our medicine foundation year guide covers the schools that offer one.
When is the deadline for Exeter Medicine?
For 2027 entry, your UCAS application must be in by 6pm on 15 October 2026. UCAS calls this the equal consideration date for most medicine courses. Exeter also asks you to use no more than four of your five choices on clinical courses. Our guide to UCAS deadlines for 2027 entry has the full calendar.
Exeter's own cut-off comes two weeks later. 29 October 2026 is the last day to submit its Extenuating Circumstances form so it counts before interview selection, and the last day for it to receive a correction to predicted grades entered in error.
Exeter says it does not read personal statements or references for evidence of mitigating circumstances, so if something has affected your studies, use the form.

A few more things to know early:
- Work experience isn't required. Exeter's FAQs say it's not part of the standard entry requirements.
- You'll spend time in Cornwall. The course includes at least one year based at the Knowledge Spa at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.
- Health checks and DBS. Offers depend on an Enhanced DBS check, and you'll need occupational health screening and vaccination evidence.
- Fees for 2027 entry are £10,050 a year for UK students and £49,300 for international students.
How does Exeter compare with other medical schools?
Exeter's A*AA offer is demanding. What stands out is the published Exeter score and the 10-point boost for achieved grades, which helps if you apply after results day.
