To study Medicine and Surgery (MBChB, UCAS code A100) at the University of Liverpool from September 2027, you need AAA at A-level, including Chemistry plus Biology, Physics or Maths. Liverpool also accepts A*AB. On top of that you need nine GCSEs scoring at least 15 points on Liverpool's GCSE scale, a 2026 UCAT result and an interview.
Every figure here comes from Liverpool's own 2027-entry pages, checked on 6 October 2026. Rules can change, so check the official A100 course page before you apply.

What A-levels do you need for Liverpool Medicine?
Liverpool's typical offer is AAA in three A-levels taken at one sitting, usually after two years of study. The subject rules matter just as much as the grades:
- Chemistry is compulsory.
- Your second subject must be Biology, Physics or Maths.
- Your third can be any academic subject.
There's also an alternative offer of A*AB. If you take that route, the A* and the A must be in Chemistry and your Biology, Physics or Maths subject, with the B in your third subject.
A few details catch people out:
- Excluded subjects. General Studies, Critical Thinking and Level 3 BTECs don't count as your third subject.
- Maths and Further Maths. Liverpool will only count one of them.
- Welsh Baccalaureate. The Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate can replace your third academic subject.
- No bonus for extras. A fourth A-level won't help you get an interview, and the EPQ isn't usually part of Liverpool's criteria.
Liverpool's FAQ says it won't use predicted grades for 2027 entry. It still checks your subjects, but your UCAT and GCSEs decide if you reach interview. A cautious prediction from school won't count against you.
How many UCAS points is AAA?
Liverpool's offer is in grades, not UCAS points, but converting it helps you compare medical schools:
See the AAA UCAS points page and the A*AB UCAS points page for the full workings, or check your own predicted grades with the A-level UCAS points calculator.
Can you resit A-levels for Liverpool Medicine?
Yes. If you're applying for the first time, you usually need at least ABB at your first sitting, and you should finish your A-levels within three years. Any offer will usually be higher than AAA, for example A*AA. You also have to fill in Liverpool's Applicant Online Form A.
What GCSEs does Liverpool Medicine need?
GCSEs carry a lot of weight at Liverpool, because they're grades you already hold when you apply. You need:
- Nine GCSEs achieved by the end of Year 11
- English Language, Maths, Biology and Chemistry at grade 6/B or above. Combined or triple science can stand in for the separate sciences.
- A score of at least 15 points from your best nine
Liverpool scores each GCSE like this:
| GCSE grade | Liverpool points |
|---|---|
| 9, 8, 7 (or A*, A) | 2 |
| 6 (or B) | 1 |
| Level 2 BTEC (non-science) or OCR award at Distinction* or Distinction | 2 |
| Level 2 BTEC (non-science) or OCR award at Merit | 1 |
These are Liverpool's own GCSE points, not UCAS points. Each subject area scores two points at most, so Maths and Further Maths can't both count. You can use up to two Level 2 BTECs or OCR awards, but not in place of English Language, Maths or science, so you need at least seven full GCSEs.
To picture it, seven GCSEs at grade 7 or above give you 14 points, so one more at grade 6 gets you to 15. English Literature can't replace English Language. Eight GCSEs are fine if they still reach 15 points with the core subjects included.
In borderline decisions, Liverpool may prefer applicants with higher GCSE scores. If your circumstances meant you couldn't take nine GCSEs, explain why on Liverpool's Applicant Online Form A.
What UCAT score does Liverpool need?
Every non-graduate applicant must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply, so that's 2026 for 2027 entry. Liverpool uses your overall score, not your scores in individual subtests, to rank applicants.
There's no fixed pass mark. The cut-off varies from year to year with the applicant pool and how it performs. Here's what Liverpool has published:
| UCAT figure | Home applicants | International applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Cut-off for 2026 entry | 1960 | 2080 |
| Liverpool's estimate for 2027 entry | About 1880 to 2010 (5th to 7th decile) | About 2010 to 2220 (7th to 9th decile) |
Liverpool stresses that the 2027 range is guidance only. It also removed older cut-offs from its website, because the UCAT changed in 2025 and earlier scores aren't comparable.
How does Liverpool choose who to interview?
Liverpool uses a four-stage process, and each stage is competitive:
- UCAT ranking. Applicants are ranked by overall UCAT score.
- Academic check. The top scorers are checked against the GCSE and subject rules. Stages 1 and 2 repeat until all the interview places are filled.
- Interview. Home applicants are expected to attend a face-to-face MMI on campus. International applicants usually have an online MMI.
- Offers. Interview scores are ranked, and the top-scoring applicants get offers.
Interviews for 2027 entry are planned for January and February 2027, and Liverpool says none will be offered after 5 March 2027. It aims to post final decisions by 31 March.
Liverpool doesn't routinely use your personal statement or reference to decide who gets an interview, though interviewers may explore the experiences you describe. It looks for insight into healthcare careers, a caring contribution to your community, clear communication and good healthcare values. There's no minimum amount of work experience.
Is Liverpool medicine hard to get into?
Yes. These figures come from Liverpool's 2027 admissions documents:
| Figure | Number |
|---|---|
| A100 applications for 2026 entry | About 3,350 |
| Offers to home A100 applicants for 2026 entry | About 730 |
| Home places for 2027 entry | 292 |
| International places for 2027 entry | 23 |
| School-leaver interviews expected for 2027 entry | About 1,830 |
About 40 of the 2027 A100 places have already been filled by deferred entrants.
Liverpool ignores predicted grades and doesn't routinely screen on personal statements, so it leans heavily on your GCSEs and your UCAT. If both are strong, Liverpool is a sensible choice. If your UCAT sits near the bottom of its estimated range, compare other schools before using a medicine choice here.
What is the Liverpool contextual offer for medicine?
For 2027 entry, Liverpool's School of Medicine plans to make up to 50 reduced contextual offers. A reduced offer is up to two grades below the standard A-level offer. They go to the most competitive eligible applicants from two groups:
- UK students living in deprived postcodes, defined as Index of Multiple Deprivation deciles 1 and 2
- UK care-experienced students
Contextual applicants still need at least 12 GCSE points, with English Language and Maths at grade 6. Liverpool may also accept a lower GCSE score, UCAT result or interview performance for them, decided each year. The scheme is for home students only, not graduates or mature applicants, and it doesn't guarantee an interview or offer.
Liverpool also makes reduced offers to eligible students from two of its own programmes:
| Programme | Typical offer if successful at interview | GCSE minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Liverpool Scholars | ABB, with the A in Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Maths | 12 points |
| Liverpool Pathways | AAB, with at least one A in Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Maths | 12 points |
You can see what ABB is worth in UCAS points if you want to compare. Our guide to how contextual offers work explains the idea more generally.
Does Liverpool have a foundation year for medicine?
Yes, but it's not a route for students currently doing A-levels. Foundation to Medicine (Year 0), UCAS code 789S, is a six-year route for UK mature and non-traditional students. You spend Year 0 at Carmel College in St Helens, about nine miles from campus. If you complete it successfully, you move straight into Year 1 of A100.
| Foundation to Medicine (Year 0), 2027 entry | Details |
|---|---|
| Who it's for | Mature students, usually out of education for 5 years or more, or with non-traditional qualifications |
| Not eligible | A-level students and school leavers, graduates, and international students who need a visa |
| GCSEs | Five at grade 6/B or above, including Maths, English Language, Biology and Chemistry (or combined science) |
| UCAS deadline | 13 January 2027 |
| UK tuition fee | £10,050 a year for 2027/28, including the foundation year |
If you're in Year 13 and want a gateway year, you'll need another medical school. Our guide to medicine with a foundation year lists the 2027 options.
Can graduates and Access to HE students apply?
- Graduates need at least a 2:1 in any subject, or a 2:2 plus a Master's or PhD, and must sit GAMSAT instead of the UCAT. Home graduates may also be eligible for Liverpool's four-year Graduate Entry course (A101).
- Access to HE students need one of the specified Access to Medicine courses on Liverpool's list. Our Access to HE medicine guide compares the rules at other schools.
When is the deadline for Liverpool Medicine?
For 2027 entry, your UCAS application must be in by 15 October 2026, and Liverpool says late applications won't be considered. If you're resitting, have extenuating circumstances or can't offer nine GCSEs, Liverpool's Applicant Online Form A is due by 23 October 2026. Check the exact time on Liverpool's medicine admissions page.
Two more rules to know:
- If Liverpool rejects you, you can make only one further consecutive application to A100.
- Liverpool's medicine course doesn't take applications through UCAS Extra.
Our UCAS deadlines guide for 2027 entry has the exact time of day and explains how many medicine choices you can make.
