UCL Medicine (MBBS) Entry Requirements

For 2027 entry, UCL Medicine (MBBS BSc) asks for A*AA at A-level, including A*A in Chemistry and Biology in either order. You also need GCSE English Language and Maths at grade B/6, and you must sit the UCAT. Eligible Access UCL applicants get a lower offer of AAB, with AA in Biology and Chemistry.

That is a high bar, but it is a clear one. UCL Medical School publishes its 2027 requirements on a dedicated page, so you can check exactly where you stand before you put it on your UCAS application. This guide sets out every part of the offer, how UCL uses the UCAT, and what the offer looks like in UCAS points.

What are the UCL Medicine entry requirements for 2027?

UCL says most of its applicants apply with A-levels or the IB Diploma. If you are taking something else, such as BTECs, T Levels or Scottish qualifications, check the 2027-entry page directly or email the admissions team before you apply. We have not listed those routes here because we could not confirm them.

Which A-levels do you need for UCL Medicine?

You need Chemistry and Biology. Both are compulsory, and one of them has to be the A*. It does not matter which one: A* in Chemistry with A in Biology works, and so does the reverse.

Your third A-level is your own choice. UCL's only exclusions for Medicine are General Studies and Critical Thinking, so Maths, Physics, Psychology, English, a language or a humanity are all fine. Pick the subject you are most likely to get an A in, because that A is part of the offer.

Two rules catch people out:

• All three A-levels must be sat at the same time. You cannot bank one subject in Year 12 and take the other two a year later.
• UCL does not accept re-sits from school leavers, and that includes re-starting Year 12. If you are planning a gap year to improve a grade, UCL Medicine will not be an option for that attempt.

If you are taking four A-levels, the offer is still three grades. A fourth subject will not make up for missing the A* in a science.

How many UCAS points is the UCL Medicine offer?

UCL does not use UCAS Tariff points to make offers. Its undergraduate entry requirements page says so directly, so you cannot meet the Medicine offer with a points total. You need the named grades in the named subjects.

Remember that a matching total does not equal a matching offer. Another mix of grades can reach the same number of points and still miss UCL's offer, because the A* has to be in Chemistry or Biology. How does UCL use the UCAT?

Every applicant to UCL Medicine has to sit the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) in the year they apply. For 2027 entry, UCAT booking ran from 23 June to 16 September 2026, with tests between 13 July and 24 September 2026, so if you are applying this cycle you should already have your test booked or done.

UCL uses the UCAT to decide who gets an interview. According to its admissions pages:

• Your total score across the three cognitive subtests (Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning) is used to rank you against other applicants.
• If two applicants have the same cognitive total, the Situational Judgement Test (SJT) score is used to separate them.
• Since Abstract Reasoning was withdrawn in 2025, the cognitive total is out of 2700 rather than 3600.

UCL first used the UCAT to pick interviewees in the 2024/25 cycle, so it has very little history to share.

What UCAT score do you need for UCL?

There is no published minimum. UCL's admissions FAQs say it is not possible to predict what score will reach interview in future years. The lowest score that gets an invitation depends on how many people apply, how their scores are spread and how many interviews UCL runs, and it will likely change each year.

You may see UCAT "cut-offs" for UCL on forums or tutoring sites. Treat those with care. UCL itself says past scores are not a guide to future cohorts, so any number you read is someone else's estimate, not a rule.

What you can control is the balance of your choices. If your UCAT total has come back lower than you hoped, think carefully about how UCL fits with the other medical schools on your list. Your teachers or careers adviser can help you look at that before the deadline.

What is the Access UCL contextual offer for Medicine?

Access UCL is UCL's contextual offer scheme for UK applicants from groups that are under-represented at the university. For Medicine, an eligible applicant gets an offer of AAB with AA in Biology and Chemistry, instead of A*AA.

The UCL-wide scheme page says you may be eligible if you attend or attended a UK state school and one or more of these applies to you: you live in an eligible postcode, you have been registered for free school meals, you are estranged from your parents, or you have spent time in local authority care. Read the scheme page to see if it fits your situation.

Two details matter:

• Only A-levels, the IB Diploma, Cambridge Pre-U Principal Subjects or Scottish Advanced Highers are eligible for the lower offer.
• The subject rule stays. A contextual offer for Medicine still needs Biology and Chemistry, just at A rather than with one A*.

Does UCL accept Access to HE for Medicine?

Yes, but only specific courses. UCL Medical School accepts the Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) at the College of West Anglia, or an Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) that conforms to the QAA subject descriptor for medicine. No other Access courses are accepted, so a general science or health Access diploma will not do.

The grade requirement is 36 Level 3 credits at Distinction and 9 at Merit. You still need GCSE English Language and Maths at grade B/6 if those subjects are not part of your diploma.

UCL puts the responsibility on you to make sure your Access diploma is eligible before you apply. Ask your college in writing whether the course conforms to the QAA medicine descriptor, and keep the reply. What GCSEs do you need for UCL Medicine?

UCL asks every Medicine applicant for GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade B/6 or above. IGCSE, O-level, IB or EB equivalents also count.

Unlike A-levels, GCSE re-sits are allowed to meet this requirement. So if you got a 5 in Maths, you can re-sit it and still apply.

How many places does UCL Medicine have, and how do interviews work?

For 2027 entry, UCL Medical School has 337 places: 313 for home fee-paying applicants and 24 for overseas fee-paying applicants.

After UCAT scores arrive in November, UCL starts inviting applicants to a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). It normally interviews around 1,000 applicants, with invitations sent on a rolling basis from December to March. So if you have not heard anything by Christmas, that does not mean you have been rejected.

When is the deadline for UCL Medicine?

UCL Medicine follows the early UCAS deadline for medicine: 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time for 2027 entry. UCAS calls this the equal consideration date for most courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary science. Your school or college needs to add your reference before the application can be sent, so aim to finish a week or two earlier.
