Quick answer: No — the University of Surrey does not make offers in UCAS Tariff points. Surrey is unusually clear about this, and unusually generous about explaining what it does instead. Surrey answers the points question in one sentence

There is no ambiguity to resolve here. Under "Entry requirements" in its undergraduate admissions FAQs, Surrey states: "Our offers are made in terms of grades, rather than tariff points." Nothing on a Surrey course page invites you to add up four qualifications and reach a total.

The interesting part is the sentence that follows it. Surrey adds that "when submitting your application please do include details of any tariff bearing qualifications that you hold so that we have well-rounded information when we are assessing your suitability for a place on your chosen course." So your Tariff-bearing extras are read as evidence, even though they never set the bar. That distinction — points as evidence versus points as condition — is the heart of do all universities use UCAS points.

What Surrey asks for, from foundation year to veterinary medicine

Surrey's course pages have already rolled forward to September 2027 entry; the September 2026 cycle closed and finished through Surrey's Clearing 2026 list. The framework below is the one a normal January application is judged against, and it is the same framework Surrey used for 2026.

The GCSE conditions vary far more than the headline grades. Computer Science asks only for GCSE English Language at grade 4 (C). Veterinary Medicine asks for five subjects at grade 7 (A) including Chemistry and Biology or Double Science, with English Language and Mathematics at grade 5 (B) — a pre-16 requirement that rules out more applicants than the A-level condition does.

What those grades are worth on the Tariff

Surrey will not accept a total, but converting its profiles is still how you compare Surrey with a university that does publish points. AAA is 144 points, ABB is 128 and CCC is 96 — the routes to each are set out on the AAA UCAS points, ABB UCAS points pages. On the BTEC side, D*DD is 152, DDD is 144 and MMM is 96.

Two things fall out of that arithmetic. First, every A-level grade step is worth exactly eight Tariff points, all the way down the scale, which makes Surrey's grade-based reductions easy to price. Second, Surrey's own In2Surrey equivalence table pairs A*AA with D*D*D, AAA with D*DD, and both AAB and ABB with DDD. In Tariff terms DDD is 144 points, above AAB at 136 and well above ABB at 128 — so a BTEC applicant is asked for more measured points than the A-level applicant sitting next to them.

Three ways a Surrey offer comes down — and why only one counts

Surrey runs three distinct grade-reduction routes, and this is the part applicants most often get wrong.

• The EPQ alternative. Many courses publish a second offer one A-level grade lower, conditional on grade A in the Extended Project. It "will not apply to any required subjects", so a Mathematics condition survives it.
• Automatic contextual offers. For UK-domiciled applicants, a reduction "typically two A-level grades or one BTEC grade or equivalent lower than the published grade". Eligibility is POLAR4 quintile 1, IMD quintile 1, experience of care, free school meals at any point in secondary school, or estrangement from parents. It is applied from UCAS data with no extra form.
• In2Surrey. For applicants whose circumstances do not trigger the automatic reduction: state school attendance plus one of a 16–19 bursary, refugee status with indefinite leave to remain, membership of a Gypsy, Roma, Irish Traveller, Showperson or Boater community, young carer status, a disclosed disability or long-term health condition, an Armed Forces parent, mature entry at 21 or over, or an IMD or POLAR4 quintile 2 postcode. It carries "a reduced entry requirement of 1x A-Level grade (or equivalent)".

None of these stack. Surrey's FAQ is explicit: "while you can be eligible, and benefit from both a contextual offer and the In2Surrey scheme, you will only receive a maximum of one grade reduction." Which qualifications appear on every Surrey course page

Surrey lists the same qualification set course by course, with a grade profile for each: A-levels, BTECs, the International Baccalaureate, the European Baccalaureate (78 per cent against ABB, 85 per cent against AAA), a QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma with the Distinction and Merit split spelled out, Scottish Highers, the Welsh Baccalaureate as the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales plus two A-levels, and T Levels — Distinction overall with a minimum grade C in the core component on the degrees checked, or a Pass with grade D in the core for a foundation year.

Two A-level rules are worth knowing. "The only A-levels we cannot consider are General Studies and Critical Thinking", and Mathematics and Further Mathematics count as two separate A-levels. Surrey also states that it treats A-levels in all languages equally, including languages used or learned at home.
